Raleigh, NC – Sullivan & Hilscher Family Law is proud to recognize Partner Kristopher “Kris” Hilscher for being named to Best Lawyers in Family Law (2025), recognized by Super Lawyers (2025) for excellence in family law his continued leadership and national recognition in the field of family law, with a particular emphasis on complex military divorce and military benefits litigation.
Mr. Hilscher is a Fellow of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), an honor reserved for attorneys who demonstrate the highest level of skill, professionalism, integrity, and contribution to the practice of family law. He is also a Board-Certified Specialist in Family Law by the North Carolina State Bar, a distinction held by only a small percentage of attorneys statewide and holds certifications as a Parenting Coordinator and Family Financial Mediator.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Hilscher has earned widespread peer recognition. Kris was selected as a 2023 North Carolina Lawyers Weekly “Leaders in the Law” honoree for setting the standard for the profession and contributing meaningfully to the legal community. He also maintains a Martindale-Hubbell AV Preeminent Rating, reflecting the highest level of peer-reviewed professional excellence.
Mr. Hilscher is a nationally recognized authority on military divorce, military pension division, survivor benefit plans, disability retirement, and the intersection of military benefits and family law. He has authored and co-authored dozens of articles for leading legal publications, including the Journal of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, Family Advocate, ABA Family Law Quarterly, Pennsylvania Family Lawyer, Virginia Family Law Quarterly, and multiple American Bar Association committee publications.
A frequent and sought-after speaker, Mr. Hilscher regularly presents CLE programs across the country. He has organized and chaired multi-part national CLE series on military family law and currently serves in multiple leadership roles within the American Bar Association, including Chair of the ABA Family Law Section Military Committee (2023–2026) and Co-Chair of the Trial Practice Committee (2025–2026). He also serves as a Special Advisor to the ABA Standing Committee on Legal Assistance for Military Personnel.

Mr. Hilscher began his legal career in 2009 and has practiced family law for more than 15 years. As a Partner at Sullivan & Hilscher Family Law in Raleigh, North Carolina, he represents clients in complex custody matters, high-asset divorce, military retirement and benefit division, mediation, and appellate litigation. He is admitted to practice in North Carolina and the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina and has published opinions before the North Carolina Court of Appeals.
Through his practice, scholarship, teaching, and leadership, Kristopher J. Hilscher continues to play a significant role in shaping modern family law – particularly in cases involving servicemembers, veterans, and their families.
